Wavell Starr column

Wow – just like that the year 2015 has gone by in a flash and as we welcome the New Year, I would like to acknowledge the special moments of 2015. It was an interesting year with a lot of change and newsworthy events, but here are the top 10 moments that in my opinion were the highlights of the year or at the very least, worthy of a mention in this column.  Ladies and gentlemen I present to you, the Wavell Awards Top 10 for 2015.

   1. Ronda Rousey Dethroned

The UFC has become one of the most profitable organizations in the world. One of the reasons for this is because they have a super talented, charismatic former women’s champion in Ronda Rousay. Until November 14, she was a wrecking machine destroying all in her path within minutes. On this historic night, Rousay was knocked out with a vicious kick from underdog Holly Holm. It was a blow felt around the world as the mighty had fallen. The rematch is destined to earn a great amount of money.

   2. Justin Trudeau becomes Prime Minister

Anyone who knows me knows that I do not participate in the Canadian democratic system (cue criticism). Having said that, I do feel Justin Trudeau is a man of great charisma. It is my opinion that he came to favour in the eyes of Canadians due to his charismatic personality more than anything else. This aligns with and supports my theory that pro wrestling is indeed real, or at least as real as the real world. Image is everything.

   3. Star Wars Opens With a Vengeance

When I was kid growing up, Star Wars was a big deal. I never could understand why back then and I still don’t to this day. I guess I was always more into sports and action movies more than science fiction. Regardless, the release of the new Star Wars movie in December of 2015 has been met with unprecedented hype and box office revenue. Anything that draws that much revenue is worthy of mention.

   4. Steve Harvey Announces the Wrong Winner of the Miss America contest

Steve Harvey announced the Miss America as Miss Columbia, when he should have announced Miss Philippines as the winner. The embarrassing error was widely criticized and he claims it was an innocent mistake. Due to my background in pro wrestling I have a hard time believing that anything that involves profit is genuine. It’s a common condition amongst pro wrestlers. The “error” has drawn more attention to the event than ever and I for one believe that this was done 100% on purpose.

   5. Former WWE performer CM Punk is announced as signing with UFC

CM Punk had long been frustrated from the toil of working for WWE. He was burned out from the grind and was eventually granted his release from WWE. He pulled no punches regarding his displeasure in podcast interviews after his departure from the company. The announcement of his signing with UFC made tremendous impact from his fan base within pro wrestling and mixed martial arts. Regardless of the outcome, the event will undoubtedly be profitable for all involved.

   6. Johnson still soaring in popularity.

“The Rock” Dwayne Johnson continues to be one of the most popular celebrities in modern times largely due to his social media approach. With key roles in hit movies such as San Andreas, Dwayne Johnson has firmly established himself as one of the most marketable entertainers of 2015.

   7. Bruce Jenner becomes Caitlin Jenner

Olympic champion Bruce Jenner publicly self-declared as transgender with the name Caitlin and was crowned Glamour’s “Woman of the Year”. This garnered media attention that catapulted this story to headlines throughout 2015.

   8. Enoch First Nation Band member Crowned Mrs. Universe

Ashley Callingbull is a member of the Enoch First Nation and is renowned for her role in the hit TV program Blackstone. Her fame instantly multiplied when she was awarded Mrs. Universe and she became an advocate for Aboriginal women’s rights. She continues to convey messages of empowerment through her motivational speaking appearances throughout not only Canada but the world.

   9. Charlie Sheen announces that he is HIV positive

In recent years, Charlie Sheen’s public behaviour has been erratic at times. Claiming to have been fuelled by “tiger blood” in earlier years, the celebrity had become known for his penchant for drugs, alcohol and women. The world reacted with astonishment when the celebrity made the announcement that he was HIV positive.

   10. Donald Trump vies for Presidency

Famous Billionaire Donald Trump has been aggressively pursuing the position of U.S. President. In doing so he has drawn a lot of publicity. His controversial theories have drawn the ire of the media and many have questioned his state of mind. The Donald remains one of the most influential characters of modern society.

Those are my choices for the Wavell Awards Top 10 for 2015. I wish you all the best in 2016!
