Two men took Regina police on a chase Monday night and eluded them for almost six hours.

Police were en route to an incident around 9:20 p.m. when they saw a vehicle speeding ahead of them. The vehicle ran a red light, and police pursued. The vehicle failed to stop and police ended their pursuit.

A short while later, the vehicle was reported abandoned and was then seized by police.

Just after 4 a.m., police attempted to check on a vehicle with the two men believed to be the same ones who evaded authorities, but again they drove off.

Shortly thereafter, police received a report about two males in a backyard in the immediate area. Canine unit tracked from the abandoned vehicle to the suspects and apprehended the first suspect, believed to be the driver, while officers apprehended the second suspect. The driver was transported to hospital as a result of canine apprehension. A search of the vehicle revealed items believed to be stolen property.

Jarrett Riley Markel (23) and Albert Martin (22) both of Regina were arrested and charged with several offences, including possession of break-in instruments, possession of a weapon, evading police and mischief. Markel was charged with driving while impaired and Martin was charged with possession of a scheduled substance, marijuana.

The two appeared in court in Regina Tuesday afternoon.
